Sonam Ongmu Denzongpa, civil celebrant on the Gold Coast

Born in the Himalayas. Present for every ceremony.

A different kind of celebrant

Where ancient wisdom meets modern ceremony

Most people grow up with ceremonies around them. I grew up inside them.

I was born in Sikkim — a small state tucked into the eastern Himalayas, bordered by Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and the Indian state of West Bengal. People call it the spiritual capital of India, and they mean it. The mountains are not scenery there. They are presence.

I grew up surrounded by a richness of tradition — Buddhist monasteries in the mist, Hindu festivals in the valleys, ceremonies older than history. Ceremony was not something you attended. It was something you were made of.

When I moved to Australia and made the Gold Coast my home, I carried that background with me. People here are building lives that hold multiple worlds at once. Eastern family, Western wedding. Hindu heritage, secular ceremony. The meeting points of cultures — that is territory I know intimately.

I became a civil celebrant because I believe every person deserves to have their most important moments held with full attention and genuine care.

Sonam didn't just officiate our wedding — she held the entire room. Every word she spoke felt like it had been written specifically for us, because it had. Our guests are still talking about it.

We were devastated and had no idea where to start. Sonam was calm, warm, and completely present. She listened to our family's stories and gave our dad a farewell that felt true to who he really was.

As a mixed-culture couple, we'd been worried no celebrant would truly understand both sides. Sonam did, completely. She wove together both our traditions with such grace — it felt seamless, and so us.

Sonam was the perfect celebrant for our vow renewal. She took the time to get to know us and thoughtfully incorporated her Buddhist culture into our ceremony, including a beautiful Himalayan wedding blessing that became the highlight of conversation at our reception. Her calm presence, warmth and personal touch added that extra something special to our day that we didn't even know we needed. We're so grateful to Sonam for creating such a meaningful ceremony and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a celebrant.

When my husband passed, Sonam gave us something I didn't know was possible here in the West — a goodbye that honored who he truly was. She guided us through every step with such calm and care, making space for the Tibetan traditions our family holds sacred. Thanks to her, my husband was able to remain at home for several days, as is our belief, surrounded by family and prayer. She connected us to exactly the right people to make it all possible. Sonam turned one of the hardest moments of our lives into something peaceful, and even beautiful.
